on september 20, 2019, carlo alberto nucci, a professor at university of bologna, italy, was invited by prof. kang chongqing and associate prof. zhang ning to visit the department of electrical engineering and applied electronic technology (eea), tsinghua university.
on the morning of the 20th, prof. nucci visited the state key laboratory of control and simulation of power system and power generation equipments and gave a special academic report in the west main building of tsinghua university. more than 30 teachers and students from the eea attended the report meeting. prof. nucci presented a report themed smart grid in smart cities: the potential of local energy communities. the report started from the composition of the local energy communities in the smart grid, gradually going deep into the operation strategy of local energy communities as well as its impact on local energy communities and the benefit of the grid, with rich and detailed contents. after the report, teachers and students had in-depth exchanges with prof. nucci on the topic of report. on the afternoon of the 20th, prof. nucci had an academic discussion with teachers and students of the eea. on the morning of the 21st, prof. nucci made a special academic report in the high voltage hall. prof. nucci made a report themed the latest development in lightning protection of distributed system. the report introduced the latest development of lightning protection of distributed system in terms of lightning protection equipment and control means.

prof. carlo alberto nucci, as the tutor of “china-eu research and innovative partner plan: renewable energy, energy efficiency and urban sustainable development program” (ires-8), visited the eea of tsinghua university. this program was initiated by european union in april 2015, aiming at strengthening cooperation and partnership in r&d and innovative networks, as well as interactions in researches and innovation in other forms. this plan mainly funds doctoral students, postdoctors and scholars from eu universities to chinese universities for high-level researches, so as to establish and enhance the long-term strategic cooperation of eu research institutes with chinese research institutes and universities. university of manchester is the organizer of the program. eu universities include university of bologna, norwegian university of science and technology, and university of zagreb; chinese cooperators include tsinghua university, north china electric power university, beijing jiaotong university, and research institute for smart power grids. in april 2019, prof. nucci’s doctoral student giorgia pulazza and master student maria maddalena gambini were funded by this program to tsinghua university for five- and three-month study in tsinghua university, and their chinese academic advisor was prof. kang chongqing.

he is chief of editor in chief in journal of electric power research (epsr), elsevier since january 2010 (previously regional editor for europe, africa and mid east since january 2005. he was the member of several working groups, such as cigre wg c4.401 'lightning' (of which has been convener) from 1997 to 2007; cigre wg c4.107 'power quality indices and objectives'; joint cigre/cired wg on 'protection of distribution networks against lightning'; chairman of cigre study committee c4 “system technical performance” for the period 2006-2012 when within cigre. he was the member of working groups “lightning performance of distribution lines” and “distributed resources: modelling and analysis”, chairman of the international steering committee of the international conference ieee powertech from 2002 to 2007, chairman of the italian pes chapter from 2002 to 2007, and chairman of the “ieee pes region 8 (europe, middle east and africa)” for the years 2009 and 2010 when within ieee. prof. nucci is a fellow of the ieee and of cigre, of which he is also honorary member, and has received some best paper/technical international awards, including the cigre technical committee award. prof. nucci is doctor honoris causa of the university “politehnica” of bucharest and member of the bologna science academy. since 2014, he is the ieee pes representative in the ieee smart city initiative.
