during nov. 3—7, 201, delta cup–ieee empower a billion lives–pacific asia regional competition)was held in shenzhen, china. in the competition, the “dream grid” team of thu department of electrical engineering was excellent to win the best student team award.
“ieee empower a billion lives” (ebl) as an international creative design competition is an international competition activity that is initiated by ieee pels and aimed to help the global impoverished power-shortage areas find the basic electric supply solution. meanwhile, the activity is supported by such institutes as the world bank. the pacific asian regional competition will collect teams and solutions in universities, enterprises, non-profit organizations and related institutions, and there are a total of six award-winning projects by exhibition and selection.
the “dream grid” project is a public welfare program initiated by the students in department of electrical engineering, thu. they can construct photovoltaic micro-grids for the local primary schools in the remote areas by enterprise sponsors and thu’s supports, so as to solve the problem of electric power supply for these primary schools. since this project was carried out for five years, the “dream grid” team has built the photovoltaic micro-grids with a total installed capacity of 70kw for six power-shortage primary schools in highland areas. so the team was hailed as the social practice gold prize team of tsinghua university and the honorary title of best practice prize for many years, and concerned and reported by such medias as cctv, the people daily and youth.cn.
